We Can Do Better

There is plenty of bad news right now about the environment, our economy and society as a whole. It's easy to look around and point the finger of blame at our neighbors, the corporations or governments, but ultimately WE (yes YOU and yes ME) are responsible for our own lives.

No one is holding you against your will as you buy that plastic water bottle, or single use plastic whatever it is you think you "HAVE" to use once and throw away.

The fact is you (and I) could think ahead and bring a refillable bottle, reusable mug, utensils or whatever it is you feel bad about.

I don't say this to guilt you into doing what I think you should do, but to remind you that YOU have the power to decide what you want to do.

I know this because I did it myself. Over the past year I have given up disposable plastic of all kinds from water bottles, to coffee cups. I haven't used a K-cup or a plastic straw or a zip-loc of any kind.

It all starts with a decision to do better and stop making excuses. We can't keep poisoning ourselves, our environment or our economy with these single use plastics while we pretend it's up to the larger powers at hand.

Ultimately "they" will only respond to trends in the market, and that starts with our decisions as consumers.

As they vaguely say "Vote with your dollars" I go a step further to specify how I vote with every decision, every dollar every day.

Here are 5 ways humans can do better each day:

  1. Switch to Fifty Skies compostable paper pods and get rid of the Keurig plastic pods forever. These wasteful single serve pods are not only bad for the environment as nearly all of them end up in landfills. They also allow micro-plastics to be leeched into your coffee as you brewing boiling hot water through a thin plastic cup.

  2. Get a quality filter, or preferably a medical grade ionizer like mine (CLICK HERE for details) and refill your own water bottle throughout the day. Never buy another plastic bottle again. If you do find yourself on the road and in need of some water please choose a sustainable water container like glass, aluminum or paper.

  3. Get rid of toxic cleaning chemicals, perfumes and beauty supplies with an easy and effective plant based essential oil product.

  4. Choose Elmhurst plant based milks as a less wasteful and more nutritious alternative to dairy based milks and plant based milks that are overflowing with fillers and oils.

  5. Try the 80/20 rule on your environmental choices. I know its hard to be 100% perfect, especially in today's hectic world, but try to commit to making better decisions 80% of the time and allow yourself some forgiveness if you might slip 20%. You might get to that magical 100% marker someday, but committing to 80% is more realistic and will get you moving in the right direction.

Ultimately, it's time for us to realize how powerful we are. The corporations will die without consumers. The politicians will die without voters.

Remember... They won't be able to make bad products if we don't spend our money to buy them.

The journey of 1,000 miles always begins with a single step. I'm proud to have founded Fifty Skies as a coffee lover who wants to help lead the way.
